Bath is a city in Somerset. It was called Aquae Sulis by the Romans in AD 43, who established a public baths around the hot springs which erupt here. The Crescent was designed and built around 1770 and dubbed "Royal" some years later. The front of the crescent is uniform, but the houses behind were all built separately by the purchasers of a length of the front facade. Hence it has been described as having "Queen Anne fronts and Mary-Anne backs", in common with many other Bath buildings.
